College Baseball, Softball : Southern Utah State beats USIU and UCSD

Southern Utah State swept a doubleheader Friday as it defeated United States International University, 11-8, and UC San Diego, 5-2.

USIU lost for the 12th time in 15 games in Southern Utah State’s first game of the day.

In the afternoon, two unearned runs in the seventh inning helped Southern Utah State to its second win of the day and third straight of the season. Tom Griffin had two hits and a run batted in for the winners. Bob Natal led UCSD with two hits--one a triple--and a run batted in.

In women’s softball:

San Diego State 1-1, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 0-0--After scoring the winning run in the third inning of the first game, the host Aztecs (4-4) won the second game when pinch hitter Kristen Mecerenka singled to score Lisa Michie from second base in the 10th.

With one out, Shannon Mason drove in Leslie Menke for the RBI in the first game. Michie (2-2) won the first game, and Vickie Bence (2-2) scattered five hits over 10 innings in the second game. SDSU’s Sherry Percival went 2 for 3 in the first game. The Mustangs drop to 3-7.
