Trans World Airlines and about 6,000 flight attendants braced for a midnight strike as government mediators sought to avert a walkout that could cripple the financially troubled carrier. The airline, which lost $193 million last year, is demanding a 22% wage cut and changes in work rules from the flight attendants to produce a minimum $88 million in savings. Carl C. Ichan, the new chairman of TWA, has said the union concessions are necessary for the company’s survival.
