PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE
Service Area: 14.3-mile line from Canoga Park to a planned Metro Rail terminus in North Hollywood.
Service Type: 90-foot trolley cars powered by overhead wires. Three-car trains operating every seven minutes in each direction during rush hour. Smaller trains at longer intervals other times.
Ridership: About 50,000 passengers a day if connected with Metro Rail or other downtown rail link, according to a Southern California Assn. of Governments estimate.
Route: Mainly or wholly along existing Southern Pacific freight right-of-way. At east end, Victory or Burbank boulevards are being considered as alternatives because of opposition to use of the right-of-way on Chandler Boulevard. At west end, routes through Warner Center are being considered.
Cost: $300 million to $800 million. Firm estimate will depend on choice of route and engineering features, such as number of rail overpasses needed to clear major intersections.
Operation Date: Project could be completed between 1993 and 1995.
Source of Funds: Revenue from half-cent sales tax Los Angeles County voters approved in 1980 to finance transportation improvements, including 150-mile rail transit network.
