Liberals Claim Big Win in Colombia’s Congressional Vote
The Liberal Party today claimed a major victory over the governing Conservative Party in congressional elections in which leftist rebels got 2% of the votes. Insurgents killed nine police after the balloting.
With about 75% of the ballots counted, all by hand, Liberal Party candidate Virgilio Barco claimed a big win for his party as candidates running under his banner gained 52% of the vote, to 39% for the Conservatives.
About 13 million Colombians were eligible to vote.
Sunday’s balloting was seen as a barometer for the May 25 presidential election since congressional, legislative and city council candidates all ran on tickets aligned with one of the three major presidential candidates.
