Stormy weather off the Southern California coast Saturday made a shambles of scheduled races off Southland shores.

Twenty-four boats showed up on the starting line for Del Rey Yacht Club’s Berger Series but only six crews were daring enough to complete the 78-mile course which took the yachts from Marina del Rey to Ship Rock (Catalina Island) and back to Del Rey.

Finishing the course were Super Star, skippered by Sid Blinder of the Windjammers Yacht Club (Class B winner); Chaos, Ken Martin, WYC (Class C winner); Hasta, Sidney Lampert, Del Rey YC; Snooky Poo Free, Steve Medof, DRYC, and Sea Mist, Suzanne Raffeto, DRYC.

King Harbor Yacht Club was forced to cancel Saturday’s race in the Lightning Class Regatta, but raced in light winds Sunday.

Boats in the L.A. Yacht Club’s Whitney, Times and Little Whitney Series fared better and were able to finish the around-the-buoys race despite wind and rain.

Only 28 of the 49 entries in Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club’s Angelman Series were brave enough to show up on the starting line.
