NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT : East Regional : Cleveland State Stuns Bobby Knight, Indiana, 83-79

Cleveland State parlayed a hectic press, hockey-style substitutions and Clinton Ransey’s 27 points into an 83-79 upset of Indiana Friday in the first round of the NCAA East Regional basketball tournament at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

It was Indiana Coach Bob Knight’s first loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament, which his teams won in 1976 and 1981.

“I think they just took the game from us right at the beginning, and we couldn’t get back into it,” Knight said. “It was too tough to come from behind because of the way they play. They have the quickness and the ability to change the tempo when they have to.”

The Vikings (28-3) were seeded 14th in the regional despite ranking second in the nation in scoring with a 90.2 average and first in victory margin.

They advanced to the second round Sunday against St. Joseph’s, which beat Richmond, 60-59. Sunday’s other second-round game pits Syracuse against Navy.

Guard Steve Alford scored 24 points for Indiana (21-8).

St. Joseph’s 60, Richmond 59--Senior guard Maurice Martin scored 21 points, including three free throws in the last 14 seconds, to lead the Atlantic 10 champions to the first-round victory.

St. Joseph’s (26-5) pulled ahead for the first time in the second half, 52-51, on Wayne Williams’ two free throws with three minutes left.

Martin, who was 9 of 10 from the foul line, hit the front end of a one-and-one with nine seconds left for a 60-57 lead, and reserve Joe Runk got Richmond’s last points on a driving goal with two seconds left.

The Spiders (23-7) got 25 points from 6-7 senior Johnny Newman.

Syracuse 101, Brown 52--Dwayne Washington and Rafael Addison scored 21 and 17 points, respectively, to propel the Orangemen (26-5) to the lopsided win.

Syracuse took the suspense out of the game midway through the first half, outscoring the Ivy League champion Bruins, 27-2, over a 7:10 span to lead, 51-23, at intermission.

It was the Bruins’ (16-11) first NCAA appearance since the tournament’s 1939 inaugural year.

Navy 87, Tulsa 68--Strong inside work by David Robinson and Vernon Butler powered the Midshipmen into Sunday’s second round against Syracuse.

Robinson, a 6-11 junior center, and Butler, a 6-7, 245-pound senior forward, worked inside for the field goals and dominated the boards. Robinson scored 30 points and had 12 rebounds, while Butler scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Navy (28-4) also capitalized on its foul shooting, making 23 of 36, while Tulsa (23-9) made only four of five.
