Marcos Reportedly Seeks Haven Elsewhere
Deposed Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos has asked the United States to help him obtain permission to settle in Spain, Mexico or Panama, the New York Times reported today.
The paper quoted U.S. officials as saying Marcos and the State Department had made serious inquiries in those countries, but they declined to say what the responses were.
“I think that if he finds a respectable place to go with reasonable housing and other arrangements, he will leave the United States,” a senior official was quoted as saying.
Marcos reportedly is unhappy in Hawaii, where he has been living at Hickam Air Force Base since fleeing the Philippines on Feb. 25, because of complaints about his wealth and past activities and because he fears legal action against him in the United States.
