Tennis Roundup : Wilander Is Surprised by Jelen, 6-4, 6-2

Unseeded Erik Jelen of West Germany upset top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden, 6-4, 6-2, Thursday in the second round of the $315,000 ABN tennis tournament at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The 23-year-old Jelen, ranked 119th in the world and West Germany’s indoor champion, knocked off the Swede, who last week won the Belgian Indoor championship, in only 50 minutes.

Last year, Wilander also lost in the second round of the ABN tournament, to John Sadri.

In other matches, second-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden defeated Dutchman Michiel Schapers, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6; Spaniard Emilio Sanchez turned back Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 6-2, 6-1, and Frenchman Guy Forget scored a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over eighth-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland.

Scott Davis surprised Tim Mayotte, 6-1, 7-6, in the second round of the $315,000 Volvo tournament at Chicago.

Davis, ranked 37th in the world, reversed a loss to the 17th-ranked Mayotte in the opening round of the Paine-Webber tournament last week.

In night matches, top-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated Sammy Giammalva, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 2 Jimmy Connors breezed past Robert Seguso, 6-0, 6-4.
