Bull Terrorizes Scranton Until Shot; 2 Injured
A bull broke out of a slaughterhouse Friday and ran amok downtown for about 30 minutes, goring one man in the chest and injuring another before being shot to death by police, authorities said.
The incident began when the animal got away from its handlers inside the Robzen’s Inc. plant and got outdoors, Scranton Police Officer Gunther Pisa said.
Pisa said workers at the slaughterhouse attempted to corner the bull on the property, but the animal apparently became frightened by spectators and charged down the street.
Gored in Chest
One of the victims, Robert Kurtz, 67, of Lancaster, was hurt when he stopped his truck and tried to help capture the bull, Pisa said.
Kurtz was gored in the chest as he stood in front of the animal, yelling and waving his arms, police said. He was listed in guarded condition at Mercy Hospital in Scranton.
The other victim, a man who was not immediately identified, received only minor injuries, police said.
The bull’s rampage ended when a police officer shot the animal three times with his service revolver.
