San Diego Prep Baseball : Wolf Gives Valhalla a 10-9 Victory
SAN DIEGO — Chadde Wolf singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday to give Valhalla (8-3) a 10-9 come-from-behind victory in its league opener against Granite Hills (4-5).
The Norsemen entered their last at-bat trailing 9-8. Relief pitcher Steve Gomez (4-0) took the win in a game that featured two homers by Granite Hills’ Todd Parker and nine errors by the two teams.
“It was a wild one, but we’ll take it,” Valhalla Coach John Marlow said.
After trailing 3-1 at one point, Granite Hills scored three runs in the third and five runs in the fifth to take a 9-4 lead. Valhalla tied the game at 9-9 on an error by Granite Hills third baseman Eric Peterson. Eagles pitcher George Bishop then intentionally walked Valhalla’s Scott Dennison to load the bases and set up Wolf’s game-winning hit.
Sharp paced the Norsemen with two hits in three at-bats including a solo home run. Brett Strickland had a double and a triple in four at-bats for Valhalla, driving in two runs and scoring two.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE
Helix 6, El Capitan 3--Helix’s Scott St. Clair hit a two-run home run in the sixth in the league opener. With El Capitan leading 3-2 in the fifth, Helix tied the game on Terry Mack’s RBI single. Mack then stole second and scored the winning run on an error by Vaquero catcher Ruben Tellez. Left-hander Damon Luban went the distance for Helix, striking out five.
Grossmont 7, El Cajon 1--Junior Lance Dickson truck out eight in five innings to lead the Foothillers. Dixon combined with Jason Floss, who pitched the sixth, and Donnie Angotti, for a one-hitter. Dixon allowed the only hit, a home run by Joey Kaewapalug in the fourth.
Rick Twyman gave Grossmont a 1-0 lead with a homer in the first. Grossmont broke the game open in the third when Shon Boney, who was 2 for 3, had a three-run homer, and Mike Rendina hit a two-run shot. Angotti was 2 for 3.
Mt. Miguel 6, Monte Vista 2--Don Young went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead Mt. Miguel. The Matadors, leading 3-1 in the sixth, were helped by three straight wild pitches by Monte Vista reliever Robert Trone. Tom Wurth went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored for the Monarchs. Delfin Merlin got the win for Mt. Miguel.
Nonleague
Bonita Vista 2, Mira Mesa 1--Pinch-hitter Kevin Cline singled home Jim Werner in the bottom of the seventh to give Bonita Vista the win in this makeup game. Relief pitcher Scott Sachrison came on in the fifth and got the win. Sachrison and starter David Woodhouse combined to hold Mira Mesa to two hits.
Chula Vista 5, St. Augustine 1--Anthony Garcia pitched a four-hitter and had a shutout going through six innings for Chula Vista. The Spartans’ Jose Sosa, 2 for 3, was the only player with more than one hit. A triple by Brian Murphy of Chula Vista was the game’s only extra-base hit.
Oceanside 6, Carson City (Nev.) 2--Finney McCarter went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as the host Pirates (4-5) beat the Senators (5-2). Senior Henry Jimenez (2-2) went the distance, giving up six hits and one earned run, for the win. Though Jimenez has lost two games, his earned-run average is 1.09. Oceanside’s Jeff Small also had two hits and an RBI.
Castle Park 9, Morse 0--Pitcher Jose Palos went 2 for 3 and allowed three hits in five innings for the host Trojans (6-3-1). Eddie Moreno was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Jimmy Ayala was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Castle Park, which had 11 hits.
Hoover 9, Mar Vista 7--Jeff Shepherd went 3 for 4, including a bases-loaded double in the fifth, to give Hoover (3-4) the victory in its final nonleague outing. Sal Ceballo hit a two-run homer in the third and later came on to pitch, getting the win as the last of five Hoover pitchers.
