Officials Tear Down Protest Signs Across From White House
WASHINGTON — Federal officials Friday began enforcing new regulations limiting protest signs and structures in historic Lafayette Park, across from the White House, by breaking up and removing those that did not conform to the rules.
One man was arrested after he refused to move away from his sign. About a dozen large plywood signs with slogans on various issues were removed.
The signs, some supported by scaffolding to heights of 12 feet, have been a fixture in the park for years. The U.S. Park Service said they are a threat to safety and ruin the aesthetic value of the park.
