Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd, the Boston Red Sox’s controversial right-hander, was fined a day’s pay, or about $2,150, for reporting late for the team’s final exhibition game.

General Manager Lou Gorman said Boyd’s excuse was that “he was packing, his dog ran out of the house, he couldn’t find the dog. He was all mixed up.”

It marked the second time this spring that Boyd had been late for a game.
