The owners of the Casmalia hazardous waste dump eight miles from Santa Maria signed an agreement with Santa Barbara County to limit the number of trucks delivering waste materials to 85 a day. The county Board of Supervisors, which earlier approved the proposal on a 4-1 vote, had threatened to close the dump if its owners did not agree to the limitation. Supervisor Toru Miyoshi had previously charged that with waste delivery trucks sometimes numbering 130 a day, Casmalia had become “a dump out of control.” The new agreement, which is viewed as a “clarification” of a use permit issued by the county in 1976, also prohibits the dump from expanding in two areas. Casmalia is one of only two hazardous waste facilities used by Southern California waste generators.
