Tighter S. Africa Curbs Resisted

WASHINGTON —
The Reagan Administration today opposed any congressional efforts to stiffen the limited economic sanctions it has imposed against South Africa, saying such moves would contain “serious and dangerous risks.”
“This is not the time to mount punitive sanctions against South Africa, but rather to use our good offices . . . to move ahead the process of reform, . . . “ Chester Crocker, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, told a House subcommittee as it opened hearings to explore U.S. options in the region.
