Workman Picks 2 Coaches for His Staff at Orange Coast
Orange Coast College football Coach Bill Workman has named two of his former assistants at Edison High School as members of the Pirate football staff.
Barry Waters, the defensive coordinator at Edison in 1979 and a linebacker coach at Golden West College for the past three seasons, will be linebacker coach at OCC. He was the head coach at Westminster High School from 1980-82.
Mike Taylor, the linebacker coach at Edison in 1978 and ‘79, will also coach at Orange Coast, though his area of responsibility was not announced. He was an assistant at Laguna Hills after leaving Edison.
Workman, who was hired March 14 to replace Dick Tucker, also said he’ll retain three assistants from last season’s staff.
George Mattias, an offensive line coach and a veteran of 23 seasons at OCC, will return, as will Dennis Walters, an offensive line assistant and a 12-season veteran. Linebacker Coach Lee Wheeler will be back for his second season.
Workman complied a 109-33-5 record, seven Sunset League titles, two Southern Section Big Five Championships (1979 and ‘80) and one Big Five co-championship (1985).
Tucker resigned as head coach in January after 24 years but remained the athletic director.
