Here’s a Current Roster of Orange County’s Revolving Bank Executives
If 1985 was a busy year for Orange County bank presidents--and it was as eight banks changed chief executives--1986 should be frantic.
Already this year eight more bank presidents in the county have resigned or otherwise vacated their offices.
Here’s the rundown on the comings and goings of Orange County bank chiefs during the past 16 months:
CALIFORNIA CITY BANK: In January, 1985, Richard Cordova, former vice president of Eldorado Bank in Tustin, was hired as president and chief executive to replace founding president Robert Hoyt. Hoyt moved up to vice chairman.
In September, Hoyt resumed his old post as president and CEO of the Orange-based bank when Cordova resigned and became a banking consultant.
In March of this year, Hoyt resumed board duties and Harvey Ferguson, former president and chief executive of Valencia Bank in Santa Ana, was hired as new president and CEO.
SECURITY PACIFIC STATE BANK: In March, 1985, Duane Rickard was named president and chief executive of the Irvine-based bank, replacing James Griffith, who retired. Rickard had been executive vice president of the parent company, Security Pacific Corp.
FAR WESTERN BANK: In June, 1985, Richard Trotter was promoted to president and chief executive of the Tustin bank, replacing Robert Manley, who resigned to join a real estate development company. Trotter had been the executive vice president.
MISSION VIEJO NATIONAL: In September, 1985, Jack Barnes, a director of the bank, replaced Lloyd Miller. Miller, who earlier was president of the failed Newport Harbour National Bank, had resigned in June. Miller was hired last month as a vice president at Commercial Center Bank in Santa Ana.
BANK OF SAN CLEMENTE: In October, 1985, Michael Dunahee, a consultant and former executive at Bank of A. Levy in Oxnard, was hired as interim president to replace Richard Lewis, who retired after little more than a year at the bank.
COMMERCEBANK: In December, 1985, Clyde Gossert, already president of the Newport Beach-based bank, was named chief executive as well. He replaced Lance C. Blue, who resigned as vice chairman and CEO to become head of the new Orange County branch of First Business Bank of Los Angeles.
ORANGE CITY BANK: In December, 1985, William Diethrich was named president and chief executive, replacing David T. Blankenhorn, who remained on the board and works as a consultant.
AVCO NATIONAL BANK: In December, 1985, Karo Danielian took over as president and CEO, replacing John Keator, who resigned. Danielian had been executive vice president at the Irvine-based bank. Keator recently started a financial services company in Santa Ana and remains a consultant to Avco Financial Services, the bank’s parent company.
PACIFIC INLAND BANK: In January, 1986, John R. Britt was named president and CEO, replacing Melvin E. Miller, who became chairman of the Anaheim-based bank. Britt had been executive vice president of the bank.
SUNWEST BANK: In January, 1986, William J. Mylymok, formerly executive vice president of Avco Financial Services in Irvine, was hired as president and CEO, replacing John Harney, who resigned. Harney and other shareholders had sold the Tustin-based bank seven months earlier to Centennial Beneficial Corp.
MARINE NATIONAL BANK: In January, 1986, Chairman Larry T. Smith took on the role of acting chief executive of the Santa Ana bank, replacing founding President Donald A. Miller, who resigned and joined National Bank of Long Beach as a senior vice president.
MONARCH BANK: In February, 1986, Terry J. Metrovich was named president and CEO to replace Michael Pollock, who had resigned in December. Metrovich previously was hired to save ailing California Heritage Bank in San Diego. It failed in November. Earlier he was co-founder, president and chief executive of Rancho Vista National Bank in Vista.
LAGUNA BANK: In March, 1986, Charles E. Keneley was hired as president and CEO to replace John B. Watz, who resigned. Watz joined Bank of Orange County in Fountain Valley as a senior vice president. Keneley had been president and CEO of First Arroyo Bank in South Pasadena.
COMMERCIAL CENTER BANK: In March, 1986, E.G. Cunningham was named chief executive of the bank and president of its parent, Westlands Diversified Bancorp in Santa Ana. He replaced Robert Heisz, who resigned to become a full-time consultant to the company. Cunningham briefly served as president of Great American Bank in Los Angeles. Earlier he was president of First National Bank in San Diego, which was the primary bank for J. David Dominelli--the San Diego financier convicted of defrauding thousands of clients of millions of dollars in phony currency exchange deals.
FIRST AMERICAN BANK & TRUST CO.: In April, 1986, Peggy Lipsey resigned, effective May 15, from the Laguna Beach bank. Lipsey, a former Eldorado Bank executive, took over as president and CEO in September, 1983. She expects to take a job outside banking. No replacement has yet been chosen.
