Sheriff’s Dept. Hit With Age Discrimination Suit

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suit in Los Angeles federal court Friday challenging a policy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department that requires employees designated as “safety members” to retire at age 60.

The action, brought under the Age Discrimination Employment Act, charged that for at least the past six years the sheriff’s office and the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Assn. had engaged in “unlawful employment practices.”

The suit seeks a permanent injunction to prevent discrimination because of age and an order requiring the defendants to provide equal employment opportunities for people who are from 40 to 70 years old.
