Afghan Communist leader Babrak Karmal returned home after undergoing medical treatment in the Soviet Union, quieting speculation that he had been removed from power. Karmal, who was installed by the Soviets, was greeted in the Afghan capital of Kabul by Communist Party officials, according to state-run Radio Kabul. The radio gave no details on Karmal’s medical problems, but said he had undergone a checkup in Moscow. There have been reports that Karmal, 57, suffers from lung problems.
