MIX AND MATCH
You may have heard that Whoopi Goldberg and weird comic Bob Goldthwait will star in “Burglar,” the Nelvana Entertainment production for Warner Bros. that writer-director Hugh Wilson will start shooting in San Fran July 14. But now we learn that the source material--Lawrence Block’s mystery, “The Burglar in the Closet”--has gotten a major sex change.
Block’s novel featured Bernie Rhodenbarr, a New York book-shop owner who moonlights by breaking and entering, who has a lesbian buddy, Carolyn, who runs a poodle grooming shop.
Well, Whoopi has the role of . . . Bernie. She’s now Bernice, a lesbian. Goldthwait will play Carl, who pampers poodles.
“I’m astonished,” Block said of the Goldberg casting. “I have no reason to believe she won’t do an excellent job. But she’s as far from the character (of Bernie) as I could imagine.”
