Road crews hired by the Environmental Protection Agency began oiling the surface of asbestos-laden roads in rural Calaveras County. EPA on-scene coordinator Dan Shane said the first oiling would be in the Copper Cove subdivision of Copperopolis, where 16 miles of roads were built 15 years ago with waste from a nearby asbestos mine and mill. Roadwork, expected to cost about $250,000, will be paid for through the Superfund toxic cleanup program because dust raised by passing vehicles could “present an imminent and substantial danger” to about 100 families living in the vicinity.
