San Diego Prep Track and Field : Cormier, Rowe, Outlaw Post Fast Times in Preliminaries

Although they were running in only preliminary races to qualify for Friday’s City Central League track finals, Crawford’s Damion Cormier and Lincoln’s Patrick Rowe and Michelle Outlaw ran fast times Tuesday at Hoover High School.

Cormier ran a 21.9 to win his 220 heat, beating Lincoln’s Marcus Hopkins, who ran a 22.2. Cormier also won his heat in the 100 yards in 9.9.

Rowe also won heats in the 100 yards (9.8) and the 220 (22.2). Rowe has run the fastest 100 meters in San Diego Couty this year (10.72).

Outlaw beat Crawford’s Shaudell Reddic in the 110 low hurdles. Outlaw ran a 14.8 to Reddic’s 15.0. Outlaw is the county leader in the 110 low hurdles at 14.27.

In the only final race contested, San Diego High’s Marc Davis won the two mile with a time of 9:37.0. He beat Goshu Tadese of Crawford, who ran 10:00.0.

In other league preliminary meets: GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Brian Boggess of El Capitan led all qualifiers in the discus (181-3) and shot put (57-0). Russell Smith of Monte Vista was timed at 49.8 in the 440, leading all other qualifiers by 1.8 seconds. In the triple jump, Matt Farmer of Monte Vista had a mark of 45-2. CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Aaron Baker of La Jolla High won the league title in the pole vault with 13-8, and Unviersity City’s Jerry Black won the long jump final with a leap of 21-10 3/4 in league preliminary events at University City High. Black also qualified for Friday’s final in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.9 and in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a 41.0. The league finals will be held Friday at University City. PALOMAR LEAGUE

Steve Stephen of Fallbrook advanced to Friday’s final with his 51-9 throw in the shot put, and teammate Tim Pipes qualified for the 400-meter final with a time of 48.5. In the 200 meters, Orange Glen freshman Glen Reyes ran a 22.3 and Eric Robinson of Vista recorded a 22.4 to qualify for the final. GIRLS

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Michelle Collum ran a 14.2 to win her heat in the 100-meter low hurdles. When .14 seconds is added to compensate for the fact that it was hand-timed, Collum’s time would be the second fastest in the county this year behind Outlaw’s electronic-timed 14.27. Yolanda Fitch of Morse won two heats. Fitch won the 100 meters (12.3), beating teammate Shawnette Sapp (12.4). Fitch also won her heat in the 400 meters (59.7). CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Laura Chapel of University City High ran the 800 meters in 2:12.4 at the league preliminary meet at University City to qualify for Friday’s final at the same site. Earlier in the season, she recorded a 2:11.91 in the event for second best in the state. Chapel also qualified for the finals in the 1,600 meters (4:56.5), far behind her state-best time of 4:50.14. PALOMAR LEAGUE

Vista’s Starla Ahu threw the shot put 38-2 to advance to the finals, and teammate Heidi Ivie qualified for the long jump final with her leap of 16-8. GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Angela Jones of Mount Miguel was a surprise leader in the discus with a mark of 131-0. Nichelle Strachan of Mount Miguel was timed at 12.8 in the 100, narrowly beating LaFrania West (12.9) of Grossmont.
