VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Navy A-6E Intruder jet crashed on takeoff today and slammed into a station wagon on a nearby boulevard, killing the woman driver and both airmen aboard the plane.
The jet knocked down several utility poles before hitting the car and setting it afire on Oceana Boulevard, which runs parallel to the runway. There was no one else in the car, Navy spokesman Philip Wilkinson said. The jet’s pilot and navigator were killed when they tried to eject from the plane, Wilkinson said.
