The University of Georgia’s Athletic Assn. should lose its status as a private corporation and come under control of the university’s academic wing, a faculty committee recommended. The committee also recommended that a separate committee--made up of faculty, students elected by the faculty and other students--establish and monitor the policies of the athletic department.

The recommendations came in response to evidence exposed during the federal lawsuit brought by Jan Kemp, a former instructor in the university’s Developmental Studies Program. Kemp agreed to a $1.08-million settlement after a jury ruled that she was wrongfully fired for protesting preferential treatment for student athletes.
