Haack Named Sunset League Baseball MVP
Huntington Beach High School pitcher Jeff Haack, who had a 10-2 record, 106 strikeouts and an 0.82 earned-run average during the regular season, has been named the Sunset League’s Player of The Year by a vote of the league’s coaches.
Haack, a senior left-hander who has signed a letter of intent to attend UC Irvine, was the only Huntington Beach player named to the first team. Ocean View, which won the league title with a 12-2-1 record, placed four players on the first team, as did second-place Westminster. Ocean View’s Bill Gibbons was named Coach of The Year.
The coaches’ teams:
First Team: Pitchers--Jeff Haack (Huntington Beach), David Holdridge (Ocean View) and Steve Kaloper (Fountain Valley); Catcher--Matt Hattabaugh (Marina); Infielders--Jeff Brouelette (Edison), Albert Rodriguez (Westminster), Mike Fyhrie (Ocean View), Steve Mullen (Fountain Valley) and Joe Aversa (Edison); Outfielders--Bill Daymude (Ocean View), Robert Martinez (Westminster), Phil Chess (Ocean View) and John Tazza (Westminster); DH--Terry Reichert (Fountain Valley) and Utility--Ryan Klesko (Westminster).
Second Team: Pitchers--Dan Jensen (Marina) and Brett Johnson (Ocean View); Catcher--Coley McClendon (Huntington Beach); Infielders--Jeff Sherwood (Ocean View), Jim Doyle (Fountain Valley), Cal Davis (Fountain Valley), Keith Laszlo (Marina) and David Leonhardt (Ocean View); Outfielders--Mike Abascal (Ocean View) and Andy Lewin (Huntington Beach); DH--Eric Christopherson (Ocean View) and Utility--Jim Dedrick (Huntington Beach).
