Wanted: Vandals, Age 80, to Deface Racy Billboards
Ultra-religious Jews plan to recruit octogenarians for their spray paint campaign to cover up billboards showing women in skimpy swimsuits, an Israeli newspaper said Wednesday.
Ultra-Orthodox leaders decided Tuesday night to canvas Jerusalem nursing homes for residents over age 80 willing--and able--to take to the streets to blot out “indecent” bus shelter advertisements, the daily paper Haaretz reported.
The plan is apparently aimed at embarrassing police by forcing them to cart away elderly vandals.
About two dozen militants have been arrested since June 1 for allegedly defacing or burning street advertisements showing scantily attired women.
Tuesday night, ultra-religious Jews in traditional black garb intensified their anti-billboard fight, hurling stones at policemen and setting trash cans afire in Jerusalem’s Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim.
