Capistrano Yacht Club to Host 2nd Tall Ship Regatta

The Capistrano Bay Yacht Club, Dana Point Harbor, will host the second annual county Tall Ships Regatta this fall when the vessels will race along the coast from Huntington Beach to San Clemente.

Entries are being accepted at the club now, according to race chairman Ron Dumas.

He said two ships already have signed up for the Oct. 4 event. One is the brig Pilgrim, modeled after the vessel on which author Richard Henry Dana Jr. cruised this coast 150 years ago.

The brig is moored near the Orange County Marine Institute in Dana Point Harbor. The other entry is the Californian, replica of a mid-1800s revenue cutter. The topsail schooner is the state’s official ship and serves as a cadet training ship.

The first county regatta last year was all but stalled by lack of wind, but half a dozen tall ships reached the finish line at Dana Point.

Information on entering this year’s race may be obtained by calling the Capistrano Bay Yacht Club, (714) 493-7102.
