Tustin : Officials Investigate Dumping of Sludge

County health officials are continuing the investigation of the dumping of sludge found in an industrial complex behind a Tustin printing company Thursday.

The county Fire Department’s hazardous materials unit responded to a call from a business near S & S Press Inc., 2011 Dow Ave. Patches of the dry sludge were found in a gravel-covered area next to the printing firm, officials said.

Battalion Chief Bernie O’Neil said the sludge dumping has reportedly been going on for about two years, and area employees have complained of headaches.

Lloyd Beverly, manager of the printing firm, said the substance in the gravel is only dirty water with ink residue from printing machines. “We are clean,” he said. “We have nothing to hide.”

He said that county health authorities inspected the plant two weeks ago and found nothing wrong.

Steven K. Wong, the Health Care Agency’s assistant director, said inspectors regularly visit plants, and they may have inspected the printing plant recently.
