Three mine supervisors were buried under rock 780 feet below the surface as a section of a coal mine roof collapsed, officials said. The victims were supervising construction work during routine maintenance while union miners were on vacation when the roof gave way at the Freeman United Coal Co.’s Orient No. 6 mine near Waltonville, Ill., a spokesman for the company said. There were no other injuries. Authorities were investigating the accident.
