A former Australian swimming champion who won a gold medal at the 1952 Olympics was sworn in as the newest federal judge in Los Angeles. U.S. District Judge John G. Davies, 57, who won his gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke, is the only naturalized U.S. citizen among the 21 active federal trial judges for the U.S. Central District of California. Davies, a trial lawyer with a Beverly Hills law firm for the past 14 years, also participated in the 1948 Olympics for Australia, then moved to the United States, winning his gold medal four years later while a student at the University of Michigan.
