City Extends Moratorium on Oversize Homes

The Beverly Hills City Council has adopted an ordinance that extends the city’s moratorium on the construction of large, single-family homes in residential areas.

The restriction limits the size of a home to 55% of the size of its lot. Under the law, a home built on a lot that is 5,000 square feet would be limited to 2,750 square feet.

The council extended the moratorium so that the Planning Commission could continue its study into a more comprehensive law controlling the size of new homes in areas zoned residential. A previous law passed by the council June 17 will expire Aug. 1. The new law extends the moratorium by 10 months and 15 days.
