California Amplifier, a Camarillo maker of amplifiers used with satellite dish antennas, reported a loss of $34,000 in its first quarter ended May 31, versus a year-ago loss of $246,000. Sales were $2.3 million, down 22.5%.
The first-quarter loss was 1 cent a share, versus 7 cents a share a year ago.
California Amplifier was founded five years ago to exploit the growth of the home satellite industry, but when big pay-television broadcasters began scrambling their signals Jan. 15, the market collapsed.
Amgen said it earned $474,000, or 3 cents a share, in its first quarter ended June 30, against a loss of $2.0 million, or 19 cents a share, a year before. The Newbury Park-based biotechnology company said its revenue increased 132%, to $7.7 million.
Amgen’s revenue has been increased by money it is receiving from Johnson & Johnson under a joint venture between the companies to develop three pharmaceutical products. In March, Amgen also signed an agreement with Eastman Kodak that will bring it $10 million in cash over four years in exchange for developing specialty chemicals.
