Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole called for a showdown vote today on the confirmation of Daniel A. Manion to a federal judgeship. Dole’s action signaled his confidence that he had the votes to win a second round on Manion. The Senate approved Manion, 48 to 46, in a dramatic “roll the dice” vote last month, but Democrats kept it from becoming final by demanding a new roll call to reconsider. Sen. Daniel J. Evans (R-Wash.), who voted against Manion, an Indiana lawyer, said that he now opposes a reconsideration of that vote, which Manion’s foes had hoped to use to defeat his nomination.
