Paramount : Catfish Gift Fills Pond
Spane Park pond is jumping with catfish this summer because of a $1,000 donation from a local businessman who wishes to remain anonymous, city officials said.
The city recently stocked the pond with 500 catfish weighing about one pound each after receiving the money, said Pat West, director of the Deparment of Human Services.
“He said he was interested in doing something for the city. Anyone interested in making similar donations to improve recreational opportunities for youth will be welcomed,” West said.
The city normally stocks the pond once a year, West said, but the donation allows the pond to be stocked twice this year.
It will be stocked later this month with about 600 catfish for the annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby. The derby will begin at 10 a.m. on Aug. 16 for youths up to 15 years old.
