Westwood : UCLA Brain Researcher Dies

Dr. Henry Lesse, the first director of research for UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute, has died of complications from a head injury. He was 60.

Lesse, a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, was one of the first American scientists to implant electrodes in the brain to study the relationship of electrical activity and learning, emotional response, epilepsy and drugs. His research in learning behavior was the first to show that the rhythms of the brain can be conditioned by behavioral signals.

Lesse’s recent studies focused on the role of cocaine and alcohol in inducing seizures in the deep structures of the brain.
