Thunderstorms riding a wave of cool air eased a record heat wave that has baked the South with withering temperatures over 100, but the storms brought little rain to end the region’s worst drought in a century.

Less than an inch fell in most areas. Atlanta had 1.56 inches of rain. At least 92 deaths in the South and Midwest have been blamed on the heat since July 7.
