The Stigma of Mental Illness in Our Society

Marjorie Levy’s letter (July 12) about her mentally ill son was very moving and very sad.

Twelve years ago I was in a locked ward of a mental hospital. I have been taking lithium since 1974 and have been free of all symptoms. I am truly blessed.

However, the stigma of mental illness is widespread in our society. Until the fear and abandonment of hospitalized patients is overcome, little progress can be made.

The suffering of families due to lack of understanding, fear, blame, guilt and embarrassment adds to the tragic circumstances.

This desperate mother in her lonely struggle and battle for better care for her son is only one of many such cases.

Volunteer programs throughout our city seem to ignore these people who would respond to a simple walk outside their hospital room. They really are almost totally ignored.

Mrs. Levy’s plea for more help is realistic. I join her in asking that people become more aware of the need for volunteers.
