2 More Quakes Shake Bishop; More Aftershocks Expected
BISHOP — Eastern Sierra residents awoke Friday for the second day in a row to the jolt of earthquakes, and they can expect more aftershocks to last month’s powerful temblor, seismologists said.
Thousands of quakes have rippled through the Bishop region since a 6.1-magnitude quake on July 21 that caused $2.7 million damage, including 150 temblors above 3.0, 20 above 4.0 and five above 5.0, seismologists said.
There were no reports of damage Friday from the latest in the series of aftershocks.
The first shaker measured 4.1 on the Richter scale at 7:27 a.m., said Wallace Ravven, spokesman at the UC Berkeley seismology lab. The second struck at 7:28 a.m. and had a magnitude of 4.7, he said.
The epicenter of the quakes was pinpointed 15 miles northwest of Bishop.
“It is in the aftershock zone and is expected to continue for some time,” she said. “We expect more.”
A 5.5-magnitude quake--about 10 times stronger than Friday’s--jolted the same area at 12:23 a.m. Thursday, breaking windows and knocking goods off store shelves.
