ALVAREZ TO MOVE TO WEEKDAY SPOT
Linda Alvarez, who currently co-anchors Channel 4’s weekend newscasts, will become co-anchor of the station’s 6 p.m. weekday newscasts Sept. 1.
This reportedly will make her the first Hispanic to anchor a major weekday newscast in this market, station executives John Rohrbeck (vice president, general manager) and Tom Capra (news director) said in making the announcement Thursday.
Alvarez will be teamed with John Beard. Kirstie Wilde, who has been co-anchoring both the 4 p.m. and the 6 p.m. news shows with Beard, will continue on the 4 p.m. program.
Alvarez, who hosted KNBC’s “Saturday Show” show in 1977 prior to accepting an anchoring and documentary producing job in Phoenix, returned to Channel 4 last August to become a weekend anchor. Since then, KNBC’s weekend newscast has shown “dramatic growth” and was No. 1 in the May Nielsen “sweeps” ratings, the station said.
A native of Los Angeles, Alvarez is active in various community groups and has received numerous awards, including five Emmys.
