Former Tennessee Gov. Winfield Dunn won the Republican nomination for his old job, and state House Speaker Ned McWherter defeated four rivals in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, in which the three leading candidates spent more than $7 million. Dunn, who held office from 1971 to 1975, easily swept to victory, amassing 120,601 votes, or 94%, with 56% of precincts reporting. Hubert Patty, a Maryville lawyer, and Charles G. Vick, a manufacturers’ representative from Memphis, each had 3% of the vote. McWherter collected 165,962 votes, or 44%, followed by Jane Eskind, the chairman of the state Public Service Commission, with 32%, and Nashville Mayor Richard Fulton with 23%.
