Gulls Near Sale to Investors Who Would Move Team to San Bernardino

After two days of meetings in San Bernardino with city officials and potential buyers, Jim Biby said Tuesday that he and his partners are close to selling the Ventura County Gulls.

“I honestly thought we had something worked out today,” Biby, the team’s general manager, said. “It might be two days, it might be four or five days. But it’s happening.”

If the investors, who Biby declined to identify, purchase the team, the Gulls would relocate to San Bernardino’s Municipal Stadium next season. Biby, who owns a third of the team, said he is seeking an agreement that would allow him to remain as general manager. Ken McMullen and Jim Colborn, the other two part-owners of the Gulls, wish to sever all ties to the team.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays are reviewing their player-development contract with the Gulls.

“Jim Biby has done an A-1 job here,” said Gord Ash, Toronto’s director of player personnel. “Our renewing the contract is contingent on factors other than the relocation of this team.”
