Long Beach : University to Be Audited

The state auditor general’s office will audit California State University, Long Beach, due to allegations of alleged financial mismanagement.

According to Kurt Sjoberg, chief deputy auditor general, members of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee who were polled on the matter by mail last week raised no objections to an audit, thus clearing the way for it to begin without a public hearing.

The audit was requested by Assemblyman Richard Robinson (D-Garden Grove), a member of the committee, after allegations by faculty members of widespread fiscal mismanagement at the university. Robinson wrote in a letter to the chairman of the committee that “the . . . administration has been accused of misappropriating funds intended for educational purposes” and using them “illegally . . . for administrative purposes.”

Members of the university administration have denied the charges.

Sjoberg said the audit will begin in about two weeks and be completed in about two months.
