The Defense Department has released $67 million to help develop Israel’s Lavi fighter-bomber, but Israel had to agree to consider alternatives to the controversial aircraft, a Pentagon spokesman said. Maj. Larry Icenogle said Israel has agreed to consider other ideas, including the purchase of U.S.-built warplanes or the use of more private American technology in developing the plane. The Lavi, whose name means lion in Hebrew, is a single-seat, single-engine aircraft designed to replace Israel’s aging Kfirs and U.S.-made A-4 Skyhawks.
