Australia protested a U.S. decision to sell its surplus sugar stockpile to China at reduced rates that will cost U.S. taxpayers about $45 million. Prime Minister Bob Hawke warned that Australia cannot be expected to adhere consistently to its military alliance with the United States if Washington continues to subsidize farm sales to China and the Soviet Union. The United States will sell China 145,000 metric tons of raw cane, undercutting Australian sales, which last year totaled 490,000 tons. Australia earlier criticized a Reagan Administration decision to subsidize wheat sales to the Soviet Union.
