Updating the Spanish Civil War

I enjoyed “Endpapers” on the Spanish Civil War a lot. I’m still thinking about it. Maybe there’s no connection, but do you suppose that Hunter Thompson, in his (then) well-received book on the presidential election of the 1970s, was merely re-inventing the mistakes of Hemingway and Dos Pasos in the ‘30s?
