Response to Illegal Aliens

I find it disconcerting to read an editorial (Aug. 3) in the regional edition of a prestigious newspaper that sanctions and applauds illegality in any form. In your defense of illegal aliens you have done precisely that and have thus brought discredit to a great newspaper. Further, you have presented unproven, incorrect and illogical conclusions as facts.

It is not true that the employment of illegal aliens is beneficial to our society and economy. Only a few segments benefit. It is not true that illegals take only those jobs that Americans will not perform. Statistics by many responsible organizations, including the Federation for American Immigration Reform, prove that illegals are hired in large numbers in many high-skilled categories. They also show that unemployed Americans of all classes will work at the most menial tasks rather than be forced on relief.

It is not true that employers need low-cost illegals to enable them to stay in business in this country. There are many ways to offset the ill effects of low-cost goods produced by cheap foreign labor. It is not true that the majority of the public favors the acceptance of illegal aliens. Reliable polls definitely prove otherwise.

If your stated views have merit, why do we have immigration laws at all? You should remember that no one advocates the elimination of immigration into this country. Most of us do believe it should be controlled and that any immigration policy should be administered in such manner that only those immigrants who can make a contribution to our society and become fully integrated citizens be admitted.

If your views are contrary to those I have stated, why do you not have the courage to advocate the elimination of all immigration laws and controls? By doing so you would be carrying your ideas to their logical conclusion.
