Construction workers at the site of the $3.5-billion Saturn automotive plant are being tested for drug use, and those caught using drugs will be suspended for 30 days, General Motors Corp. says.

“What we’re trying to do is to prevent someone who’s abusing substances from working on the site and endangering his own life, as well as his co-workers,” said Laurie Kay, community relations director for Saturn Corp., a GM subsidiary.

The drug-screening tests are administered during training for construction jobs and are repeated randomly on all construction employees, Kay said last week.
