Nearly 40% of 223 Los Angeles area teen-agers questioned for a private survey admitted using cocaine at least once and 90% of them said they are “heavily influenced” by peers to use it. Psychologists Daniela Alloro and Robert Butterworth, who commissioned the study, concluded that there is an epidemic of cocaine use among teen-agers in Los Angeles and that not even the recent cocaine deaths of basketball star Len Bias and former UCLA football player Don Rogers have frightened them. “They think they’re too smart for that to happen to them,” Alloro said.
