Most of Houston’s sanitation workers stayed off the job for a third day despite Mayor Kathy Whitmire’s threat to fire more of them for staging a wildcat strike over pay cuts and increased workloads. Police escorted about 30 trucks to prevent confrontations with the strikers. Only 90 workers showed up for work, while 1,010 either called in sick or went to a City Council meeting to complain about the workload.
