A San Diego man is in fair condition with a broken collar bone, broken ankle and internal injuries suffered in a fall from the Coronado Bridge on Thursday, authorities said.

Police said they believe that Leroy H. Acosta, 21, jumped off the bridge, which is the site of many suicides. He is believed to be the first person to have survived the 180-foot fall into San Diego Bay, they said.

Police said they received a call at 12:15 a.m. about a car stopped on the bridge and a man on the railing. By the time police arrived, the man had jumped, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Harbor Police pulled Acosta from San Diego Bay and he was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center.

According to police, Acosta had been drinking after a fight with his wife and told his wife he was going to jump off the bridge.
