British astronomers have discovered the most distant known object in the universe, a quasar whose light takes 10 billion to 20 billion years to reach Earth, scientists said today.

The universe was only 10% to 20% of its current age when the light of the quasar began its journey in space at 186,281 miles per second, members of the Science and Engineering Research Council said.
